5 Key Takeaways From The Movie Acrimony
This weekend I had the pleasure of watching the Tyler Perry movie Acrimony. You know his movies are usually great, and it came with a great message.
Here are five key things that the movie Acrimony taught me:Â
- Don’t give up on your dreams.Â
Robert in the movie had a big dream of launching a battery that was set to make billions. However, everyone was telling him to go out and get a job because they did not believe in his dreams. He did not listen to them, he just held on to his dream, even though it was hard, he still held on to it.Â
The key takeaway here is that even though people around us may not believe in our dream, we have to believe in our dream because it’s our dream, and it’s our job to make that dream come true.
- Some people start with you, but some don’t end with you.Â
Melinda and Robert started out together. Melinda believed in Robert, she helped him through tough times, especially in the early stages of their lives where she paid his college tuition and helped to fund his dreams. However, she was not there in the end; she did not see it through to the end.Â
The key takeaway here is that people start out with us, but they don’t always end with us. We just have to stay focused and keep striving towards our dreams.Â
- Know Your Worth
This is probably the most important takeaway from the movie. Robert went to a meeting, and the CEO offered him I think it was 800,000,however his product was worth billions. Robert knew that his product was worth more than 800,000 and so he turned down the offer. Robert was struggling, he could’ve taken that 800,000 and just go on with his life, but no, Robert held on to his product. Robert said you know what, this is my dream and I’m worth more than 800,000.Â
The key takeaway here is that we have to know our worth and not let anyone tell us different. Another point came out of this scene, sometimes people may know the value of our product, but they try to undervalue it so that they can get the most out of it.Â
- Hold on to your vision.Â
Everyone around Robert was telling him, you need to go out and get a job, this thing is not worth it, this thing is not working out. But Robert held on to his vision. He had to wash dishes, he was going through the motions, he ended up homeless, but he held on to his vision. In the end, he became a millionaire, the same CEO that offered him 800,000 turned around and offered him $75 million.Â
The key takeaway here is that we are often too quick to let go of our vision, and people around us may discourage us, however, we have to believe in ourselves and hold on to our vision and take action steps to make that vision come true.Â
- Be careful who you listen to.Â
This is another important point. People will influence our decisions, even close family and friends may tell us not to do something or to give up on our dreams. Melinda’s sister told her to leave her husband. They told her, he’s not worth it, he’s no good and she listened to them. She divorced her husband, and she missed out on her blessing, she missed out on everything that Robert promised her.Â
People speak from where there are in life. That’s why you have to make sure the people you listen to are where you want to be.
– Tony Gaskins
The key takeaway here is that people can keep you from your blessing. We have to be careful who we listen to, because not everyone’s opinions matter.
